The university legal requirements state that intellectual property and respective know-how associated with research results that have been made by university employees in relation to their employment belong to the university. Commercial contracts that deal with intellectual property therefore require authorization by the university administration.

The university insists on the registration of intellectual property rights (patents, trademarks, etc.) to prevent jeopardizing of a later commercialization. If possible, registration is made together with a partner from the private sector who is interested in the commercialization of the results.

The university grants interested partners licenses permitting them to exploit rights in intellectual property. Revenues from the commercialization of research results are divided between the involved scientists, the involved research groups and the university.

The contractual agreements are applied if intellectual property was produced in a collaboration with a third party. Here again, intellectual property that has been made by university employees during such collaborations belongs in principle to the university. The industry partner is granted an option to license the results for commercial exploitation.

Unitectra operates according to the guidelines established by the technology transfer professional of the Swiss universities.
