2007

2007 was a very successful year in technology transfer for the Universities of Bern and Zurich and their associated hospitals. This is also true for Unitectra which manages a large part of these activities on behalf of these institutions.

The number of collaboration projects with economic partners again showed a strong increase by almost 30% which reflects both the interest of the university scientists for such collaborations and the attractiveness of these institutions for companies. It also proves the value of the processes established to handle such projects. Overall, Unitectra handled almost 800 new collaborative research projects with economy for these institutions.

The commercialization of research results from the two universities and their associated hospitals also continues to develop very positively. A variety of products which are based on R&D activities of researchers of these public institutions are successfully marketed by different companies. In addition, a number of new spin-off companies were again created last year.

Further details about Unitectra's activities in 2007 are provided in the summary of the Annual Report which also is available in a printed format upon request.

1999 Foundation of Unitectra

The Universities of Bern and Zurich create a common technology transfer organization called Unitectra. As a non-profit corporation under Swiss law Unitectra is completely owned by the Universities of Bern and Zurich. Originating from Biotectra, Unitectra takes over all of the latter's previous activities. With their support the Universities of Bern and Zurich thus demonstrate their engagement for an effective improvement of know-how and technology transfer and for an increased co-operation with private industry for the benefit of the public.

Publication of the second, revised edition of the Biotechnology Industry Guide Switzerland.

Achievements at the Universities of Bern and Zurich in 1999:
130 cases, half of these invention disclosures. 50 contracts, of which 14 licensing agreements and over 20 sponsored research agreements, including one sponsored research agreement over the sum of CHF 40 mio. between Novartis Pharma, the Neuroscience Center and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich covering 10 years.

1996 - 99 Biotectra - the predecessor organization

The predecessor organization Biotectra is founded at the beginning of 1996 by Herbert Reutimann und Adrian Sigrist in the context of the Swiss National Science Foundation's Priority Program Biotechnology (SPP BioTech).
Mission: Consulting and practical assistance of researchers connected to the SPP BioTech regarding technology transfer and contributing to the improvement of technology transfer in Switzerland, especially in the field of biotechnology/life sciences.

In summer of 1997 the canton and the University of Zurich agree on Biotectra taking the responsibility for technology transfer in the field of life sciences at the University of Zurich. In summer of 1998 a similar arrangement with the University of Bern is reached under which Biotectra manages selected technology transfer projects at the University of Bern.

Biotectra also produces various publications such as the "Swiss Biotechnology Industry Guide" (several editions) and different publications about the creation of spin-off companies and other topics in technology transfer. Based on a common initiative the management of SPP BioTech and Biotectra promote the foundation of the Association of Swiss Biotechnology Companies (VSBU) in 1998.
