He continued with a doctorate on scanning force and friction force microscopy at the CSEM (Swiss Centre for Electronics and Microtechnology) and the Institute for Microtechnology at the University of Neuchâtel, Switzerland. He made substantial contributions to the commercialization of two novel types of lateral force microscopes. During his doctorate he received a research scholarship which allowed him to work as a 'visiting scientist' at the IBM Almaden Research Center, San Jose, USA. After receiving his PhD, Martin joined Blaser Swisslube AG where he served for 10 years as a coolant developer and specialist for tribological projects.
