Preparation Definition of the scope of the research project and preparation of the project plan and the budget in mutual agreement between you and the partner. The project plan usually is added as an attachment to the collaboration agreement.
Contractual provisions Based on the project plan and your interests, Unitectra will draft the agreement and will conduct the negotiations with the partner in consultation with you. Alternatively, Unitectra will check a draft agreement provided by the partner.
Project implementation Project implementation: Any contacts with the partner during the implementation of the project, including invoicing, are handled directly by you. After completion of the agreement review a control sheet (“Laufzettel”) required by the finance department will be produced.
Reporting If the project leads to results, which the partner wants to use commercially or which will be protected by appropriate means (patents, etc.), Unitectra will assist you in this process and will take the appropriate measures (see commercialization process).

Research collaborations with partners from the private or public sector can be very different in nature. In any case it is important to properly define the rights and duties of each party and to ensure that the specific and diverse interests are sufficiently accounted for. Unitectra assists the researchers in negotiating and drafting research agreements. We make sure that the agreements are reasonably balanced and that they fulfill the requirements of the university or university hospital. It is recommended that you involve us early in the process in order to avoid delays resulting from necessary amendments at a later stage of the negotiations.

In preparing the project budget, please refer to the applicable overhead policy of your institution. In addition, the funding by the partner might be subject to VAT depending on the nature of the project and the legal domicile of the partner (Switzerland or abroad). The finance department of the university is in charge of answering any questions related to overhead and VAT.

In concluding any research agreements the researchers have to make sure that the project does not lead to any conflict of interest, such as in the case of parallel projects with different partners on the same subject or through the use of non-authorized information or materials.
